MEC wants peaceful election

Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) chairperson Chifundo Kachale has urged stakeholders in Nkhata Bay to ensure there is peace ahead of the June 29 fresh election in Nkhata Bay Central Constituency.

Speaking on Friday during a stakeholders meeting at St. Augustine Community Day Secondary School the MEC chairperson, who is also a judge of the High Court of Malawi, said elections are not there to divide people but to elect a person to lead them at a particular period.

Said Kachale: “Remember there can only be one winner in an election.

“So it is important for political parties to prepare their people to accept official results of the election.”

He also said there will be no registration of new voters and nomination of new candidates.

Nkhata Bay District Peace Committee chairperson the Reverend David Kandawire said he was optimistic that the campaign will be peaceful.

“We are engaging stakeholders in the election to ensure there is peace during campaign period,” he said.

On her part, Nkhata Bay acting district commissioner Beatrice Mbakaya said the council is ready for the election.

The seat became vacant after the Malawi Supreme Court of Appeal nullified the May 2019 results that declared Symon Vuwa Kaunds (Democratic Progressive Party-DPP)  as the winner.

People’s Party candidate Ralph Mhone contested the results in the High Court and later appealed to the higher court.
