Midnight combat

The 2026 World Cup qualifier between the Flames and Namibia at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe on Thursday grossed K76.96 million.

Malawi lost the match 0-1.

The gross was about K42 million more than what was raised from the Africa Nations Championship play-offs second leg against Comoros a fortnight ago.

According to a gate revenue reconciliation form, K42.37 million was raised through pre-sale of tickets while match day collections amounted to K34.59 million.

About K28.35 million went towards expenses such as gate management and security living a net of K48.61 million.

From the net, Footbll Association of Malawi (FAM) got K34.03 million representing 70 percent, stadium owners Ministry of Youth and Sports received K12.15 million, which was 25 percent of the net while Malawi National council of Sports got K2.43 million representing five percent.

FAM broadcasting and marketing manager Tulipo Mwenelupembe said they were satisfied with the amount, “considering it is the first time achieving such figures for a mid-week evening match”.

He said: We intensified our marketing shead of the match and distributed tickets in areas outside the City of Lilongwe, reaching out to more fans in untapped areas.

“The turnout also gives us confidence that Malawians love the evening experience. We are building from the previous evening match when FCB Nyasa Bullets played Moyale in the 2024 FDH Bank Cup final when we provided extra security for the fans and their vehicles.

“We believe we have made good strides in improving the evening experience for the supporters. We cannot achieve such success without them. This is their team and we owe it to their support.”

Ministry of Youth and Sports spokesperson Macmillan Mwale described the gross as encouraging.

“The revenue almost doubles from the previous match and we urge the citizenry to continue supporting their team by coming in large numbers,” he said.
