Minister of Homeland Security Peter Mukhito says his ministry will conduct an audit of contractors who have failed to complete police staff houses despite receiving funds for the projects.
Speaking on Thursday in Kasungu District during an inspection of police staff houses and agricultural activities at Kasungu Prison, he said the audit will establish the reasons behind the delays and ensure that responsible contractors are held accountable.
Mukhito said the delays have affected the welfare of police officers and their ability to perform their duties effectively.

He, however, assured the officers that the government will release funding to facilitate the completion of the outstanding works.
“The ministry will ensure that the contractors are funded to expedite construction works,” said Mukhito, adding that government is planning to expand prison infrastructure across the country to address overcrowding.
He also commended the Malawi Prison Service for its efforts to become more self-reliant through vocational training and agriculture activities.
Central East Region Police Commissioner Davilin Mwamkili appealed to government to speed up the construction of police staff houses in the region.

The Malawi Government launched the construction of houses for officers of police, Malawi Defence Force, Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services and Malawi Prison Services to improve their working and living conditions.
However, delay in completing the houses has left some officers facing housing challenges.
