Minister of Information Gospel Kazako has challenged community radio stations in Mangochi to come up with initiatives that will generate money for their institutions to be competitive and sustainable.

He said this on Tuesday after visiting Dzimwe and Lilanguka community radio stations in the district.

His advice came after the two community radio stations presented challenges they are facing to the minister.

The radio stations also asked government to consider giving them businesses through advertisement.

But in an interview after the tour, Kazako said it was high time community radio stations began to look outside the box by going around in their areas and covering people’s events such as weddings, engagements and initiation ceremonies at a fee.

“You can also take advantage of fishers and make programmes that can promote their businesses,” he said.

Radio Lilanguka board chairperson Immanuel Chodzeka commended the minister for the advice.

“His visit has taught us a lot of things. We feel honoured and energised to serve the community better,” he said.

Kazako was accompanied by Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra) officials during the tour.
