Ministry champions digital trade laws

Ministry of Trade and Industry has asked Parliament to pass necessary laws that will oil the country’s participation in the African Continental Free Trade Area and boost the ailing economy.

Speaking at a meeting with lawmakers in Lilongwe on Saturday, Secretary for Trade and Industry Christina Zakeyu said the country has to keep pace with global and continental trends to compete effectively on trade.

Chitsulo: It can boost the economy

“Let us work together towards a future where Malawi not only participates but also leads in the digital economy within the AfCFTA framework, unlocking new opportunities for our businesses and citizens,” said Zakeyu.

Parliamentary Committees chairperson coordinator Joyce Chitsulo pledged the lawmakers’ support to ensure the country has appropriate laws for digital trade.

“By creating a unified digital market, we can unlock new sources to boost the economy,” said Chitsulo.

Malawi signed up to the continental treaty which seeks to break the barriers to promote free trade.
