Pregnant_mothersMinistry of Health has embarked on a $15 million (about K6 billion) Results Based Financing (RBF) programme to promote nutrition, health and safe motherhood for pregnant women in Mchinji.

The programme is being run with assistance from the Norwegian and German governments.

RBF national coordinator Reagan Kaluluma, said during a stakeholders meeting on Wednesday that the project will help the selected health centres in the district to have in stock utilities needed when women are giving birth, provide beds and incentives for the ultra poor pregnant women.

“We will provide an incentive for the pregnant women because we know some women cannot afford to buy what the hospitals tell them to, so we would like to reduce this burden to the women by giving them some cash to buy the necessities and also feed themselves,” he said.

He said the initiative, which is being managed by the Reproductive Health Unit in the Ministry of Health, will help reduce maternal and newborn mortality and promote women to go and deliver at health centers.
