The Ministry of Education says provision of quality and relevant education is a key catalyst for developing human capital, which is one of the enablers for attaining the Malawi 2063 (MW2063) Agenda.

The ministry’s quality assurance officer for South West Education Division Dedrix Dube said this during the grand finale of Malawi Broadcasting Corporation’s (MBC) Top of the Class Season Four quiz competition held at the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences in Blantyre on Friday.

Providence Girls Secondary School from Mulanje won the finals after edging out Dedza Government Secondary School by 49 points to 46.

“One of the mandates that we have as the ministry is to provide quality and relevant education in line with MW2063. So, quiz competitions help to prepare our learners so that they are always at their top, but also it promotes learning processes and learners are encouraged to read extensively and share ideas,” he said.

MBC director of administration and human resources Justice Matonga said one of their mottos is to inspire the nation and they are doing this in line with MW2063, the country’s long-term development agenda.

He said: “So, we are very excited that we are part of this competition and I congratulate the winning school, the runners-up and those that won at divisional levels.

Key sponsor FDH Bank Plc’s head of finance Richard Chipezaani, whose organisation coughed K30 million for the 2023 edition apart from providing a K1 200 000 cash prize to the overall winners, said the bank takes pride in sponsoring education and committed further sponsorship in the next edition.

“As a homegrown bank, FDH Bank plc also wants to take part in developing this country and this is what prompted us to support the MBC Top of the Class Season Four quiz,” Chipezaani said.

Flora Botha, a Form Three student who led a four-member Providence Girls Secondary School quiz team attributed the victory to practice and teamwork.

Her school trailed 21 to 14 points in the first four rounds before winning the last round called a ‘mixed bag’ that included governance and other general knowledge questions.

As runners-up, Dedza received a trophy and K700 000 while winners from the country’s six national educational divisions pocketed K500 000 each as a consolation.

About 20 secondary schools from South West, South East, Shire Highlands, Central West, Central East and North divisions participated in the 2023 season.

Global Distribution Industry, the Malawi Bureau of Standards and Reunion Insurance Company co-sponsored Season Four of the MBC Top of the Class quiz edition.
