Organisers of Miss Heritage Malawi say the event to crown the queen will take place on July 15 at Amaryllis Hotel in Blantyre.

Miss Heritage Malawi national director Maddie Mkuwu said the pageant is unique because it is about teaching people where they come from and their history.

“We know, we now have a number of beauty pageants, but this one is different in that it is all about one’s heritage. We have Maseko ngoni, yao, sena and other tribes. Being from a specific tribe is one thing, but knowing its roots and history is another and that is what this competition is all about,” she said.

Mkuwu said during the finals, contestants will parade in traditional attire and evening wear in line with international standards of the competition.

“The contestants will also have a cooking competition where they will present various local dishes and a special judge will choose a winner who will be rewarded during the finals,” she said.

Mkuwu said all these are aimed at helping the contestants to be abreast with their heritage.

“We have 14 finalists who will battle it out in the finals,” she said.

Mkuwu said that the Miss Heritage Malawi’s theme this year is mental health.

One of the contestants, Victoria Michongwe expressed her excitement to participate in the competition.

“I have always wanted to participate in the competition. I hope to carry the day, but even if I don’t, I will walk away fulfilled,” she said.

Miss Heritage Malawi 2023 is scheduled to travel to South Africa next month to represent the country at the Miss Heritage Global 2023. She will also automatically become the brand ambassador for General Alliance Insurance.

Some of the sponsors of the competition include Amaryllis Hotel, Shayona Cement, Hashtag Fitness, Paperplane Engineers, FK Cosmestics, FGU Dance Crew, Tapps, Entertainers Promotions, Dali Fashions, Chiko’s Wadrobe, among others.
