Mixed views as trade fair closes today

Malawi Confederation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (MCCCI) says it has achieved its objectives for the 34th Malawi International Trade Fair ending today.

In an interview yesterday, MCCCI communications executive Orama Chiphwanya said the fair provided a platform for local and international delegates and exhibitors to connect and explore new business opportunities.

She said: “This exhibition has achieved its objective because our aim was to enable them showcase various industries and sectors that exemplify the private sector from manufacturing and technology to agriculture and value-added services, providing linkages opportunities and collaborations.”

The MCCCI spokesperson said besides the exhibition, the chamber lined up several activities to establish business partnerships, networks and opportunities to help small and medium enterprises have their products certified as they aim for the regional markets.

“For instance, we had information sessions from the African Continental Free Trade Area and Malawi Bureau of Standards, a networking dinner and packaging conference that enabled participants various opportunities on trade and linkages.

“The fair also provided the youth with a mentorship opportunity to enhance their employability and give them business connections,” said Chiphwanya.

Speaking separately, one of the exhibitors, shoe manufacturer Bantu Arts, who also won best exhibitor and sealed a K1 million deal to produce safety boots for Sun Gold Cooking Oil Company, decried low patronage.

Minister of Trade and Industry Sosten Gwengwe expressed satisfaction with the quality of the products showcased, saying it highlights strides attained in value-addition.

This year, 167 firms, including foreign exhibitors from Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Tanzania and Kenya, participated.

This is a rise from last year’s 134.

The fair, which started on May 23, was held under the theme ‘Boosting Malawi’s Export Capacity through Enhanced Production.
