Mlaka quits ECG, back to revive music career
Musician-cum-pastor McDonald Mlaka Maliro has quit his role as pastor at the Enlightened Christian Gathering (ECG) church and is back home to revive his music career.
The artist was working as pastor in e-Swatini, formerly Swaziland. ECG church is led by prophet Shephered Bushiri.
The singer and composer said he returned to Malawi to reunite with his family.
He said in an interview yesterday: “As you know, my children are in school here and that meant that my wife was spending most of her time here in Malawi.
“It was difficult for me to be outside the country all alone when my family was here.”
Meanwhile, Mlaka is now set to revive his music career.
“I am seeking God’s direction. But I am still a pastor and a servant of God. I am very certain about my music career though,” he said from his base in Balaka District.
To set the tone for his comeback, Maliro will unveil his forthcoming 10-track album titled Risen King at the end of April.
He said: “Coming back won’t be a problem. The generation that we used to entertain then is still around. The demand for my music is high and my album is ready.”
During his time away, the dimension of music has changed with the coming in of new players, but Maliro observes that the new bandwagon has put more focus on their prominence on social media while ignoring the other tenets that make a complete musician.
“These artists should not get carried away with their popularity on social media. They should know that one day, people will want to watch them perform live on stage,” he said.
Two weeks ago, Maliro made a surprise cameo appearance during a fundraising concert for flood survivors in Lilongwe at Sunbird Capital. Next Friday, he will perform at Mibawa Multipurpose Hall in Blantyre.
