LifeCo Holdings Limited has donated 1 000 tree seedlings to Michiru Forest Reserve in a bid to protect the environment.

Speaking on Wednesday during the tree-planting exercise on the mountain, LifeCo Holdings Limited assistant manager Sheilla Khomeliwa said they donated the seedlings to sustain the green initiative of the mountain.

“We have seen the adverse effect of climate change, as such, we decided to join efforts in planting trees to mitigate the challenges,” she said.

Michiru Plantation manager Ida M’bang’ombe said the shortage of forestry workers was making it difficult to protect the forest from poachers.

She said: “Michiru Mountain is different from the 1990s due to deforestation.

“This is because there are only 10 forestry workers who cannot protect the forest from charcoal-makers and people cutting down trees for timber.”

M’bang’ombe has since appealed to partners to help take care of the trees they plant on the mountain.

Michiru Plantation has about 4236.8 hectares, but only 45 percent of the area has vegetative cover.
