Malawi Olympic Committee (MOC) at the weekend drilled sports administrators during a two-day course held in Blantyre.

Speaking during the closing ceremony on Sunday, MOC vice-president Flora Mwandira said they organised the course for associations’ presidents and general secretaries to sharpen their skills and knowledge about Olympic values.

“We chose associations’ presidents and general secretaries because some of them have new members and we want them to be in line with MOC and Olympic Solidarity spirit,” she said.

Banda: We shall find solutions

Mwandira appealed to the 18 participants to utilise the course to improve their associations.

“Such kind of courses are offered with blessings from International Olympic Committee [IOC]. So, take it seriously,” she said.

However, the MOC veep urged associations to encourage women to take up leadership positions.

One of the participants, Netball Association of Malawi (NAM) general secretary Carol Bapu, in an interview, said the course was important as it covered critical administration thematic areas.

“The course was an eye opener. It will help our association  as it tackles decision making, leadership health and safety, roles of administration, strategic planning formulation and core values of Olympics,” she said.

Lawn Tennis Association of Malawi (Ltam) acting general secretary Regina Dembo said the course  would help to run the association effectively.

“It was a great course and we have been enlightened on a lot of things. From who and what MOC is to processes of how to effectively run our respective organisations. I believe that from the knowledge I have gained, our organisation will start running smoothly,” she said. The course was attended by representatives from swimming, cycling, handball, hockey, taekwondo, lawn tennis, table tennis, netball,  wrestling and volleyball associations.
