MPC elects interim office bearers

Malawi Paralympic Committee (MPC) has elected an interim executive committee to do ground work for the association that governs physically challenged athletes.

James Chiutsi, former Malawi Pool Association president, was retained as interim president; months after the Malawi National Council of Sports appointed him in similar capacity following the dissolution of the Juma Mkandawire-led MPC committee.

The elections, held at the Malawi National Council of Sports’ offices on Saturday, saw Patrick Kayira ushered in as vice-president with Samuel Mayuni taking the post of general secretary. He is deputised by Damiano Ligoya. Edward Namalima is the interim treasurer.

Chiutsi yesterday said their most immediate challenge is to put grass roots structures and re-apply for re-admission to the Africa Paralympic Committee (APC) and the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) which suspended MPC over abuse of a grant.

“We want to review what is on the ground and ensure that by the first quarter of next year, we should hold elections. After being appointed in interim capacity, there were no allocations of positions, so we sat down among ourselves to hold polls,” Chiutsi explained.

Meanwhile, some 15 girls and four guiders are undergoing coaching training in Blantyre under the tutorship of MPC coach George Luhanga who is drilling them on theory and practice in talent identification and sports management among others.

The IPC is the global governing body of the Paralympic Movement.
