Mpulula to quit if silverware eludes him again

Controversial coach Leo Mpulula has declared that he will resign as Azam Tigers coach should he fail to win any silverware in the coming season.

Mpulula, who is now starting his third season with the Kau-Kau Boys, said he would like to open a new chapter by winning a cup this season.

“If I do not win a cup or at least achieve a top-three finish in the TNM Super League, then I do not think it will be proper for me to continue.

“It is every coach’s hope to deliver and those are the targets that I have set for myself,” he said.

He also claimed to have already communicated his position to the club’s technical director Robin Alufandika.

However, Tigers general secretary Geoff Kachale, who doubles as the club’s operations director, said the coach will be assessed based on his performance.

“I am quite certain that he has said that to set personal targets which is very good, but as a club, we’ll assess him in accordance with his performance.

“We’ll also try to give him the required support so that he should meet his targets,” he said.

Mpulula was roped in at Tigers after guiding Blantyre United to earn promotion into the Super League.
