Speaking at Kamuzu International Airport (KIA) on arrival of the relief items yesterday morning, MRCS president Innocent Majiya said the load includes shelter tool kits for over 2 000 families, over 1 000 kitchen sets and sanitary packs for women.

He said MRCS appealed for K6 billion worth of response materials and this is the first consignment received from the IRCS.

Said Majiya: “This support will help us to provide support to the victims who are now being sent back to their communities. It will help in constructing their shelters as they continue to recover from the devastating effects of the cyclone.”

On her part, Department of Disaster Preparedness chief disaster preparedness officer Natasha Mbengo said government is decommissioning camps, which were in schools to pave the way for opening of schools on Monday.

She said 480 schools were turned into camps to shelter Cyclone Freddy survivors, but over 350 camps have already been decommissioned.
