Kezzie Msukwa retained the Chess Association of Malawi (Chessam) presidency unopposed during the body’s elective general assembly at Kamuzu Institute for Sports in Lilongwe.

However, Msukwa, who will be in office for another four-year term, was not the only one that had no contender for a position in Chessam.

All but publicity secretary seat went without challengers. Former Southern Region Chess League (SRCL) publicist Makhosi Nyirenda beat Stanley Mpinganjira by 18 ballots. He accumulated 21 votes.

Mark Chikoko retained the vice-presidency while Gershom Chima, Yohane Misomali, and Misheck Nyirenda went in as general secretary, treasurer and national schools chess coordinator respectively. Executive members are Mayeso Mphande, Petros Mfune, Susan Namangale and Gift Kadaluka.

Former general secretary Leonard Sharra, ex-treasurer Paul Nyirenda and former publicist Gilton Mkumbwa did not seek re-election.

Only committee members of Central Region Chess League (CRCL) and its Northern Region counterparts took part in the voting process after the SRCL was disqualified for not paying affiliation fees to Chessam for the last three years.

Outgoing Chessam publicist Gilton Mkumbwa, who will pave way for Makhosi Nyirenda, confirmed yesterday that the SRCL failed to pay affiliation fees of K20 000 whereas the Central Region Chess League (CRCL) and the Northern Region Chess League (NRCL) settled their arrears and voted.
