Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) chairperson Chifundo Kachale has said official results for the Zomba Central Constituency Mtiya Ward by-elections will be released today.

However, unofficial results at press time at 9pm showed Democratic Progressive Party candidate Maxwell Finiasi was leading with a wide margin.

He said this yestetday at Gymkhana Club Grounds in Zomba at the end of the voting process.

Kachale: The elections were credible

Kachale, a judge of the High Court of Malawi, said the voting process was credible despite low-turnout of voters.

He said: “The only challenge was some voters from other wards who came to try to vote and were sent back. Their names were not in the voters register here.”

The ward has a population of 6 459 registered voters.

The contesting candidates were Maxwell Finiasi of Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), Tereza Kambale of Umodzi Party, Mwalala Micah of UTM Party, Humphrey Rabeti of Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and Natasha Thewe of United Democratic Front (UDF).

The ward became vacant following the death of councillor Ramsey Kajosolo of DPP in June this year.
