Malawi National Netball Team interim coach Samuel Kanyenda says Queens’ captain Carol Mtukule-Ngwira’s absence at the forthcoming 2023 Netball World Cup will be a huge blow.

The battle-hardened goal defender has been ruled out due to a knee injury she sustained at her English club Team Bath.

In an interview yesterday, Kanyenda, who doubles as Netball Association of Malawi (NAM) technical director, said being the most experienced player, her absence will be greatly felt.

He said: “Her experience would have been vital at such a major event. Anyway, we have some up-and-coming players that can fill the void.”

On her part, NAM general secretary Isaac Chimwala also described her absence as “a huge setback”.

He said: “Not only is Carol a pillar at the back, she is also the captain. We will definitely miss her leadership during the games.

“However, this is an opportunity for other players to rise to the occasion. The coach for sure has a backup plan for Carol.”

The player could not be reached for comment yesterday.

With four Netball World Cups and five Commonwealth Games appearances, Mtukule-Ngwira is the most experienced Queens’ player in the current squad.

She has amassed a wealth of experience during a playing career dating back to 2004. During that time, she has helped the Queens achieve their best-ever rankings of fifth place at both major international tournaments.

The former Kukoma Diamonds captain signed a one-year deal with Team Bath in February.

Meanwhile, Kanyenda has said preparations are going on well.

He said: “I would say so far, we have had no problems and preparations are progressing well.”

New Zealand-based shooter Joyce Mvula-Nyirenda and goal defender Towera Vinkhumbo-Nyirenda, who is based in the United Kingdom, have already joined the squad while Australia-based shooter Mwawi Kumwenda will join the squad in South Africa as she is currently tied up with club commitments.

According to NAM, the team is scheduled to depart on July 21.

Before the global showpiece, the Queens will face world champions New Zealand in Cape Town and they will also host Zimbabwe’s Gemz in friendly matches.

The Queens, who are ranked sixth in the qorld and second on the continent, are in Group B alongside third-ranked England, 10th-placed Scotland and 14th ranked Barbados.
