A 32-year-old murder suspect police have identified as Malamula Jekiseni from Nkhotakota has committed suicide after knowing he was on the police’s wanted list.

According to Nkhotakota Police spokesperson Williams Kaponda, the law enforcers suspected that Jekiseni—who came from Chitsulo Village in Traditional Authority (T/A) Mwansambo in the district—had a hand in the mysterious disappearance of three people.

Apparently, some people from his community told the police that he knew something about the disappearances.

Kaponda said on June 11 2015, members of the community’s policing group arrested the deceased, but he managed to escape before he was handed over to police.

“Since the incident, the police [launched] a man-hunt to bring the suspect to book on the alleged murder charge, but only to find him dead on July 6 2015.

“According to the deceased’s brother, Jekiseni’s body was discovered in a bush within the village,” he said.

Kaponda said the place where Jekiseni’s body was discovered had human bones, his clothes,a voter’s registration card with his particulars and a rope hanging from a tree.

“Nkhotakota Police Station criminal investigations officer Cosmas Kadzandira, in [collaboration] with Nkhotakota District Hospital health personnel, confirmed the death was due to suicide, ruling out any foul play,” said Kaponda.

He said it is alleged that the suspect, on different occasions, coaxed friends to accompany him to unknown destinations for business ventures or job opportunities only to return alone after sometime.
