Musicians Union of Malawi (MUM) will soon review its constitution following the change of the body from an association to a union.

The constitutional review is one of the issues to the discussed at its annual general meeting (AGM) to be held on August 15 at Kamuzu Institute for Sports in Lilongwe.

Chimwemwe Mhango, president of the union, told The Nation in an interview that the change of stsatus to a union demands adjustments in the constitution which is why they included constitutional review in their AGM this year.

“The main issues which we would like to tackle concerns contractual agreements. We do not want artists to be given peanuts after being hired or employed. So we will come up with minimum rates which every artist needs to demand upon being hired,” said Mhango.

He added that, among other issues, the body will look into women representation in the executive, opening new branches in rural areas and review of the term of office for its executive members.

“There are other areas which need to be reviewed since the change from an association to a union and we will do that during this AGM,” said Mhango.

There will also be election of new office bearers during the AGM.
