Muslims are not terrorists but peace-loving people and partners in development whose contributions, presence and faithful service are a pride of communities.

Dyton Marshal, chairperson of Malawi Muslims Award 2014 organising committee, said this during prize presentations in Blantyre on Monday.

Marshal reiterated that terrorism has no religion, arguing it was wrong to associate Muslims with violence.

The event was organised by Malawi Muslim website to recognise and honour good practice and celebrate the exemplary work of people who have done a lot to the development of Islam and Malawi nation.

“Among the awardees are former president Bakili Muluzi who has been recognised as the champion of freedom of worship and first president in democratic Malawi; Sidik Mia is awarded as best Muslim politician and Swadick Sanudi for sticking to the teachings of Islam despite being a celebrity as well as sheikhs Muhammad Uthman, Ali Kamwendo and some others recognised posthumously,” said Marshal.

He said to sustain the awards, the committee would soon embark on a fund raising strategy.

Norwegian ambassador to Malawi Asbjorn Eidhammer, who was in attendance during the awards, described Malawi as a role model to other African countries on religious tolerance and peaceful co-existence.
