Must, Unesco sign MoU
University of Science and Technology (Must) yesterday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) aimed at promoting the country’s economic development through culture and heritage.
Through the MoU, Unesco and the university’s Bingu School of Culture and Heritage (Bisch), will establish a culture, academic and educational cooperation and work together on a range of cultural and educational activities.
Unesco has pledged to offer internship opportunities to Must students, assist in mobilising resources and equipment as well as provide technical support in fulfilling Must’s training research and dissemination works.
Bisch is currently running two programmes namely bachelor of arts in Indigenous Knowledge Systems and Practices, and bachelor of sciences in Sports Sciences.
In an interview after the MoU signing, acting executive secretary for Malawi National Commission for Unesco Emmanuel Kondowe said his organisation will facilitate Must’s access to the latest knowledge and expertise as promoted by Unesco and also facilitate Must’s participation in Unesco’s intellectual networks in the field of culture.
Said Kondowe: “We are going to find students’ scholarships; link the school with suitable experts within and outside Malawi who might be willing to teach at Bisch in these courses; work with Bisch
On her part, Must vice-chancellor Address Malata said the partnership will help promote sports in the country and help Malawi realise its potential in as far as promotion and benefiting from its ‘rich’ culture is concerned.
During the event, Unesco donated over K5 million to help in the students scholarship programme.
