Mwanza Secondary School lacks desks

Listen to this article

The once prestigious Mwanza Secondary School is in critical shortage of resources notably desks and chairs, a problem which has forced students to learn while seated on the floor.

Further, the school faces a serious shortage of teaching and learning materials, beds and mattresses.

This was revealed last Saturday when the Public Accountants Examinations Council of Malawi (Paec) donated desks and chairs worth K600 000 to the institution.

All the students interviewed on the sidelines of the donation presentation ceremony revealed that it is difficult to learn in such an environment.

“Imagine we’re sleeping on rough reed mats at night and sit on bare floors in class. How do we concentrate in our studies in such conditions?” asked Mphatso Banda, a Form Three student.

Mwanza district education manager Harris Kachale, who attended the official handover of the desks and chairs by Paec admitted being reminded of the challenges the institution is going through, but failed short of addressing them due to lack of resources.
