Police in Mzimba have expressed concern over increasing murder cases in the district. Since January 1 2018, the district has recorded five murder cases.

Out of the five, three were recorded in February.  Ironically, the cases surfaced after police intensified campaigns against mob justice.

Mzimba Police Station spokesperson Peter Botha said the deaths in February were recorded in just two weeks which is worrisome.

Botha: This is worrisome

He said the first case was recorded on February 3 while the third case was recorded on February 17.

Suspects in two of the cases are still at large. In the other case, the suspect has been arrested and will answer a charge of murder, according to police.

“During the night of February 3 at Chindindindi, Witness Phiri, 75, was brutally murdered by unknown people.  This came a week after  unknown criminals also murdered Khennah Zimba, 80, at Bulala. The suspects are still at large.

“On  February 15, Ackison Zimba,16, was murdered allegedly by his friend Lyson Kamanga, 25, of Chimbwangando Village in Traditional Authority Mmbelwa  in the district after the two picked a quarrel,” he said.

According to Botha, the other incident took place on Saturday, February 17 at Bulala where a guard Peter Mlotha, 55, of Alufeyo Mlotha Village, T/A Mpherembe  in the district  was brutally murdered by unknown criminals.
