Mzimba youths get business boost

National Youth Council of Malawi has given money to six youth clubs from traditional authorities M’Mbelwa and Mzikubola in Mzimba District to boost their agro-businesses.

Speaking on Tuesday during the ceremony, National Youth Council of Malawi programme officer Felix Chiyenda said they want to address unemployment among the youth in the country.

“The award comes after most youths in the district are already into farming, that is why we have come in to provide technical support in business management to empower them economically,” he said.

Chiyenda emphasised the importance of empowering youths in agribusiness because it is the country’s economic backbone.

“The youth have learned bee-keeping farming, soya bean farming, beans farming, maize farming and fish farming,” he said.

Chiyenda said 14 youth clubs presented their business ideas and the judges selected six winners.

Mzimba district youth officer Chigonjetso Chilomo commended the initiative, saying many youths in the district were migrating to South Africa to seek employment.

Chimwemwe Youth Club official Mphatso Gondwe said the money will boost their soya bean production.

“Our vision is to have a mill to produce soya flour,” she said.
