The maiden Summer Fashion Show is set to take place at Springs Park in Mzuzu on October 28, organisers have announced.

The event will involve modelling and will showcase designs with models drawn from Malawi, Zimbabwe and Tanzania. So far, 12 models have enlisted for the Summer Fashion Show after two months of intensive audition exercise.

Organiser of the event, Willard Likwambe-Msosa, said they had particular attributes that guided the criteria of their choice when selecting participants.

He said the event will not take place as a competition, but a fashion show and will, therefore, not attract any prizes.

“Our first task has been to select the participating models. We have gone for both up-and-coming and established models. Among the qualities that we were looking for were height, confidence in presentation and a body size which fits modelling standards,” he said.

Out of the 12 models who will participate in the event, five have been drawn from outside Malawi.

Tanzania has contributed two and three are from Zimbabwe, including the reigning Miss Zimbabwe Tania Aron.

The organiser said the platform will be used to exchange cultural experiences among the countries that will be represented at the event.

Msosa said: “The preparations are going on well. The sale of tickets is progressing well and we are satisfied with the numbers we are getting. We are on course of achieving our objective which is bringing something new to the people from the North who love homegrown talent.”

Some of the participants include Rookia Utawaleza Jussab, Daud Wisk, Becky Thindwa and Divine Dhaka.

In a separate interview, one of the participating models, Thindwa, said she was excited to be part of the fashion show and she is raring to deliver her best. She commended the organisers for bringing an event of such nature.

“This is a good opportunity for us models, make-up artists and designers to network and showcase our art to the world. As a country, we need more of these events for our industry to reach the next level,” she said.
