Namibia game raises K13m

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) fell short of reaching its K15 million (about $37 500) gate revenue from Wednesday’s 2014 World Cup qualifier against Namibia’s Brave Warriors at Kamuzu Stadium.

FAM accountant Christopher Mdolo said K13 248 500 (about $33 121) was realised, but they were expected to get 70 percent from the net.

“At the moment, we are distributing to service providers such as police [K1.8 million], cashiers [K1.7 million], stewards [K437 500] and then we are also supposed to pay others such as ticket designers and printers, first aid and fire personnel and after that process, we’ll get 70 percent with 25 percent and five percent respectively going towards ground owners [government] and Sports Council,” said Mdolo.

FAM chief executive officer Suzgo Nyirenda said they were satisfied with the figure realised.

“Of course, the estimation was to hit K15 million, but we did not have 17 000 people in the stadium and others got complementary tickets.

“So, I would say the figure is quite satisfactory,” said Nyirenda.

The recent international friendly match against Zimbabwe’s Warriors grossed about K6 million (about $15 000), but the charges were almost half compared to the Namibia game.
