Nankhuni suspended for six months
Malawi Law Society (MLS) has suspended private practice lawyer Gift Nankhuni for six months and ordered him to remit K477 million to his complainants.
A public notice the MLS published yesterday signed by honorary secretary Gabriel Chembezi said that the society’s disciplinary committee made the determination after conducting a hearing and further fined Nankhuni to pay K500 000 as costs of the proceedings.

Nankhuni’s suspension is from January 10 2025 and will end on July 10 this year.
According to the notice, Nankhuni of G. Nankhuni and Partners engaged in fraudulent or improper conduct in the discharge of professional duty and that there was misconduct bringing the profession into disrepute contrary to sections 89(2)(b) and 89(2)(j) of the Legal Education and Legal Practitioners Act.
In an interview yesterday, Chembezi confirmed the suspension of Nankhuni and said the society is also handling cases relating to complaints against other lawyers which are at different stages.
He said: “We will provide a comprehensive report on the work of the disciplinary committee at the annual general meeting next month.”
When contacted yesterday, Nankhuni, who is aspiring to contest in the September 16 2025 General Election as parliamentary candidate for the governing Malawi Congress Party in Lilongwe City Centre Constituency, said he had seen the public notice the MLS has issued, but would not comment.
“For now I will not make any comment on the matter,” he said.
Commenting on the implications of the suspension on Nankhuni’s political aspirations, political analyst Wonderful Mkhutche said the lawyer can vie for public office but constituents or opponents aware of the suspension may use the information to discredit him.
