National Bank of Malawi (NBM) plc, official sponsor of the Scorchers, on Thursday hosted a ‘Thank you’ party for Malawi Women’s National Football Team supporters in Rabat, Morocco.
NBM plc head of corporate banking Bernard Masi said in an interview that they decided to host the party to thank the fans for their support.
“As official sponsors of the Scorchers, it is our humble duty to express our appreciation to the supporters for the tremendous support they accorded the Scorchers. We are, therefore, here to encourage them further to support the team with all their hearts and bring the cup home,” he said.
Others who attended the party included Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture Alfred Gangata, his Information and Digitalisation counterpart Shadrec Namalomba, and Minister of Natural Resources Patricia Wiskes, Malawi Students Union (MSU) in Morocco, and the Embassy of the Republic of Malawi in Morocco officials.
Gangata thanked the supporters for cheering on the team in every match.
“Let us finish the work on Sunday by rallying behind our team as we have done so that we should take the trophy home,” he said.
Taking his turn, Namalomba also thanked the supporters for being the 12th player.
“We have reached the Wafcon final and earned our place among the world’s elite at the [2027] Fifa Women’s World Cup. The world now knows Malawi as a footballing nation. Let us rise this Sunday, act as the ultimate 12th player for the Scorchers, and make our nation count,” he said.
Wiskes also thanked the supporters and urged them “to do more on Sunday so that we should take the trophy home”.
Scorchers self-proclaimed chief supporter Isaac Jomo Osman lit up the party with the support slogans alongside other the supporters.
“But our job is not done, come Sunday we should raise our tempo even higher and let the stadium know that Scorchers supporters are here and that will motivate our girls to win the match and write history and all of us will be part of this history,” said Osman, who is also Mayor for the City of Blantyre and owner of Kukoma Ntopwa Women’s FC.
President of the Malawi Students Union in Morocco, Jamu Cosmos thanked NBM plc and the ministers for organising the party to show their appreciation for the support that they are giving the Scorchers.
“We also appreciate our Ambassador General Vincent Nundwe [retired] and entire staff of the Malawi embassy here in Morocco for the support in terms of logistics for the supporters, especially the students community and we promise to continue supporting the Scorchers so that come Sunday, we should be part the history,” he said.
