Ndirande artists to honour mothers

Ndirande-based artists have teamed up to honour mothers with a free concert dubbed Mudi Festival as part of celebrating Mother’s Day.

In an interview on Thursday, chairperson of the organising committee Isaac Chizaka, commonly known as Isaac The Duke, said the event, scheduled for October 17 at Chirunga Ground in Ndirande, is a special recognition for the role mothers play in society.

“As artists, we were raised and nurtured by our mothers. They supported our talent and careers. It is proper to honour them with a free concert in our beloved township of Ndirande,” he said.

Chizaka explained that initially the concert started two years ago, but was being hosted by the all-female Ndirande-based choir Neligo Women.

“This year, they approached us to say they will not be able to host it. So, few Ndirande-based artists and myself took it upon ourselves to have it and make it big,” he said.

According to Chizaka, in the past two years, the concert was for gospel artists only, but now it will involve urban and secular artists too.

“Artists based in Ndirande, those who were raised in Ndirande or have a connection with the township are welcome too,” he said.

In a separate interview, Ndirande Anglican Voices music director Denis Kalimbe said as a choir they have become what they are today due to the support Ndirande residents offered them throughout the years.

“We want to highlight that Ndirande Township is actually a great place. And our mothers in the township are raising great minds and deserve all the honour,” he said.

On his part, Ndirande-based musician Steve Wazisomo Muliya said the event is exciting as it celebrates mothers in a unique way.

“The significance of mothers cannot be overemphasised. Some of us have grown up in Ndirande with single parents and that is mothers. This is the moment to pour out our hearts in love as we celebrate them together. So, we will indeed come together to celebrate a mothers’ love.”

The organisers are still looking for well wishers to partner with them and make the day special.

So far, Chibuku has donated K500 000 towards the event.

Other artists billed to perform include Ethel Kamwendo-Banda, Nepman, King James Phiri, Neligo Women’s Choir, Ndirande Anglican Voices, Fujie Kasipa, Diwa Khwiliro, W-Twice, San B and Queen Fyah, among others.
