Umodzi Party (UP) president Professor John Chisi has said nepotism is stifling development in the country.

Chisi made the remarks at a rally he addressed at Chimwalira Primary School in Traditional Authority (T/A) Mbiza in Zomba on Saturday.

Said Chisi: “For example, I come from Rumphi and instead of listening to my vision for the country, some people look at where I come from. We should do away with tribalism and work for the benefit of mother Malawi.”

He told the gathering that he has great passion for the country that he has sacrificed his job in order to serve.

“I was training doctors at College of Medicine. I was comfortable because I had a blanket, a house and food to eat. I left all these because I want you to have them,” he said.

Chisi added that Malawi will only prosper if it puts in positions right people who will strive to change the economic status of its citizens.

He deplored the tendency of hiring contractors from cities and towns to build schools in rural areas.

“What we want is a feudalism type of running things where a chief will act as a landlord. He will be in charge of everything and in that case, a school block which costs K40 million will cost only K3 million,” he said.

Chisi said many people in rural areas are not educated because of poor educational strategy.

“We lack teachers, we lack doctors and other things because we have not put a conducive environment which will allow many people to be educated,” said Chisi.
