Tourism, Wildlife and Culture Minister Moses Kunkuyu on Sunday launched a parliamentary seat campaign in John Tembo’s Dedza South Constituency by donating an ambulance to the constituents.

The move comes a week after Kunkuyu bade farewell to his Blantyre City South constituents where he has been member of Parliament (MP) since the 2009 general elections.

Kunkuyu told Dedza South constituents that he has moved from Blantyre City South constituency because he has realised that it is high time he returned to develop his mother’s home (Dedza South).

Kunkuyu said: “I have done a lot of developments in Blantyre South Constituency but I thought it is also important for me to help my home district.

“My mother fell sick and died because there was no ambulance to carry her to the hospital. Since her death, I have been concerned about deaths of mothers in our country. But since I don’t have enough resources to help all mothers in the country, I have chosen to donate this ambulance to this constituency.”

Traditional Authority (T/A)Kamenyagwaza said the ambulance has come at a right time and promised Kunkuyu that chiefs will take care of it.

“Chiefs have already formed a committee which will be managing this ambulance. Honourable Kunkuyu wanted to be responsible for fuel expenses of this ambulance, but we have told him that what he has done [to donate the ambulance] is enough, hence chiefs will be contributing money for fuel,” said Kamenyagwaza.

Are these proceeds from the Car Hire business that folded unexpectedly due to Cash Gate rumours?

  3. Tell us what your mother was suffering from first and do not use the death of your mother as a campaign strategy. That is an insult and lack of respect for the dead. Why did you not pick her yourself? That is what we all do here. Whenever our relatives or neighbours get sick we use our own means to take them to hospital because the money meant for ambulances and other health care means is stolen by you politicians. We do not want you cash-gate people in this constituency. Not at all.

  4. The Ambulance donation looks like a winning political tactic, it worked in Blantyre, why not in Dedza. 7. Mr Kunkuyu and his type are sorry ass politicians. A car/truck requires quite a bit to keep safely on the road. Most likely none of the chiefs has ever owned a car/truck. Mr Kunkuyu should have given a little bit of thought as to how he could use the resources that he has to benefit his constituents. Before very long the ambulance will be a rusting carcass perched on a pile of bricks. This is similar to what JB does giving people dairy cows, not knowing those are the most difficult category of livestock to keep. Stupid people!

  9. Kunkuyu is a bloody liar? What development is he talking about? Isn’t he the same guy who pissed off chiefs for in his constituency for abandoning a clinic project? Didn’t you read this on http://timesmediamw.com/kunkuyu-chiefs-clash-over-dumped-malawi-project/#more-3226

Malawian parliamentarian for Blantyre City South Moses Kunkuyu has come under fire from chiefs and subordinates from Kampala in his constituency for dumping a health centre project.

But Kunkuyu, who is also Information and Civic Education Minister, has accused the chiefs of trying to tarnish his image, saying the same chiefs changed their mind on the project in favour of an Admarc depot.

Group Village Headman Kampala and Village Headman Martin said in an exclusive interview yesterday that they felt duped, having mobilised their subordinates to contribute towards a now dead project.

The traditional leaders said following attacks on people on their way to Zingwangwa Health Centre especially at night, they pleaded with their MP to have a health centre and he agreed.

After being allocated a piece of land by the responsible authorities, he said the parliamentarian asked traditional leaders Kampala, Martin, Baluti and Wiskesi to mould and burn bricks for the project.

Kampala said Kunkuyu told them he would start off the project with Constituency Development Fund (CDF) and get the rest of the funds from other sources.

“We moulded and burnt at least one million bricks in 2010 and we were expecting the project to start off but up to now, nothing is happening.

“If anything, the bricks are being stolen each passing day and had it been that we do not engage some youth to guard the bricks at night, we could have lost all the bricks by now,” said Group Village Headman Kampala.

He said attempts to meet Kunkuyu and discuss the matter have been hitting a blank since he ascended to the ministerial position. This, he said, prompted the traditional leaders to elect a Village Development Committee (VDC) in July this year to remind him about the project.

“What we heard from that meeting was that our MP changed his tune and began talking about constructing an Admarc Depot since another health centre is under construction in Nancholi Township.

“This has put us in a quandary because the people who dedicated themselves in moulding and burning the bricks want answers from us on the progress of the health centre which would have benefited people from at least eight villages,” Kampala said.

On his part, Village Headman Martin said the chiefs suspect that Kunkuyu has diverted money meant for the project hence his preference for a smaller project of an Admarc depot to a health centre.

“This is a big space which could have accommodated a block to be used as a health centre, five staff houses and a brick wall fence.

“We are convinced that he is using the money meant for the kick-starting of the health centre project in Dedza where we are told he will be contesting for a parliamentary seat,” Martin said.

But Kunkuyu, while refusing to comment on the accusations yesterday accused the traditional leaders for attempting to tarnish his image.

“The traditional leaders spoke at Chisangalalo ground—I have that on record and I can give it to you— that they wanted an Admarc [depot]. I, then went to the City [Blantyre City Council] to submit the proposal and yesterday [Sunday] the chiefs chose where to construct that,”

Asked to comment on the future of the health centre project, Kunkuyu said that was immaterial.

“The Ministry of Health looks at distance when establishing hospitals. You cannot have one in Manase, Manyowe or Sunny Side just because one wants it; the ministry considers distance from nearest hospital.

“We already have one in Nancholi under construction,” he said.

Kunkuyu said the Dedza issue should not come into play because he has not declared that he is moving away from his constituency to Dedza.
