Malawian scoops British Military Award

Malawian martial artist serving in the British Military, Yamikani Guba, has been named this year’s third best British Military Sportsperson of the Year achiever.
Guba, who is based in Germany, confirmed the development in an e-mail on Monday.
“I got the third place award which was presented by the chief of general staff,” said Guba.
He holds a fourth Dan Black Belt in taekwondo from the World Taekwondo Federation.
The award ceremony took place on December 12 2013, when the Army held its annual conference at its headquarters in London.
Guba and the other two winners were nominated out of approximately 100 000 athletes among British soldiers.
Guba, who is the British Army taekwondo team captain, has also been nominated for the Combined Services Sports Awards 2013 (Army, Navy and Airforce), which will be held in March next year.
“This year has been so successful for me. I thank my family members and friends for their support and encouragement” he said.
Guba started practising martial arts at Blantyre Youth Centre before joining the British Army in 2007.
