Tight race

FCB Nyasa Big Bullets yesterday registered their third straight win, beating Mafco FC 3-0 at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe to return to the top of the FDH Bank Premiership as the see-saw continues at the summit of the flagship league.

Just like was the case the previous weekend, the People’s Team had been dislodged from the pinnacle, albeit temporarily, by their fellow Blantyre-based Mighty Wanderers, who warmed the seat just for a day.

Following yesterday’s victory, Bullets have 36 points, a point above the Nomads, from  17 games apiece.

Bullets have now kept  six clean sheets in six straight victories, having last conceded in their only defeat to Goshen City Dedza Dynamos, which ended 1-0.

In yesterday’s match, Clever Kalambo  drew first blood in the 13th mimute from a rebound after the Salima-based Malawi Defence Force side’s captain had cleared a free-kick.

The clearance landed on the striker’s feet and he did the rest to perfection by beating goalkeeper Owen Mbale.

The closest the hosts came to scoring was five minutes later when Prince Kachere’s effort was kept out  by in-form Bullets ‘keeper Innocent Nyasulu.

New-signing Zimbabwean Tinaye Tsimba, who was named player-of-the-match, sealed Bullets’ victory  when he struck twice late into the match to make it 3-0 and three points were in the bag for the People’s Team.

At Mzuzu Stadium, Silver Strikers registered their first win in the second round, edging Moyale Barracks 1-0 courtesy of Innocent Shema’s seventh minute strike.

He headed home Chinsisi Maonga’s free-kick. The win ended the Bankers’ two-match losing streak.

It was also the first win for the Reserve Bank of Malawi-sponsored outfit’s coach Patricio Kulemeka, who replaced Peter ‘Shoes’ Mgangira.

Despite the win, Silver remain fourth with 32 points, four points behind the leaders.

At Nankhaka Stadium in Lilongwe, Standard Bank Blue Eagles put home ground advantage to good use when they swept aside Chitipa United 3-0 to remain third with 34 points.

After a goalless first half, the Malawi Police Service side took the lead in the 53rd minute through Tonic Viyuyi who doubled the cops’ advantage in the 69th minute to complete a brace before Webster Nzunda made it 3-0 in the 75th minute.

In another match, Red Lions and Ekhaya FC played out a goalless draw.
