Newly appointed Blantyre Urban sports officer John Chiutsi has unveiled a strategic plan that will bring back sporting activities at both primary and secondary schools under his jurisdiction.

Chiutsi, who is among district sports officers ministries of Sports and Education have deployed, revealed the plan at the Blantyre Youth Centre (BYC) last weekend when he also introduced his committee chairperson Andrew Mkwezalamba and general secretary Marjorie Banda to zonal committee members, teachers and other stakeholders.

The former Malawi Paralympics Committee (MPC) president said they want to get to serious business with the sports among pupils as was the case over a decade ago, when physical education was a mandatory subject in schools.

“We need to rekindle the fire; we have to start identifying talent in various sporting spheres from the schools as was the case before. Few days ago, we visited schools such as Stella Maris, Zingwangwa and Blantyre secondary schools where we found that they still have some sports equipment which are not used,” said Chiutsi.

“That will be our starting point as we begin to approach and send proposals to some companies and organisations for financial support,” he said, adding that he was baffled to see hockey equipment stored in a toilet at one of the schools.

Chiutsi, however, said they plan to organise a big sporting event soon at Kamuzu Stadium for pupils within their jurisdiction.

George Luhanga, who was among over 30 zonal committee members and teachers who attended the meeting at BYC, said they will work together to bring back the past glory of sports in schools.
