BetaORG has donated various items worth K17 million to patients at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) and the elderly in Blantyre as part of celebrating the festive season.

The assorted items include maize flour, cooking oil, salt, squash, sugar, soya pieces, wrapers (zitenje) and soap.

BetaORG national director Bridget Mbeya said in an interview on Tuesday that one of the organisation’s key values is supporting those in need.

She said: “One of our main pillars is to help marginalised people in need of basic necessities.

“Therefore, considering that we are in December when we commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ but it is also a time we celebrate the power of giving and sharing.”

BetaORG project lead Mirriam Chipeta said through the organisation’s executive director Washington Mwenye, who is based in the United States, they are asking churches and organisations to collectively give back to the communities this season.

QECH nursing officer of 4A Ward Anele Mwale said the support came at the right time when the hospital was facing food challenges.

“This support has helped our patients, especially those who have been in the ward for some time,” she said.

Berachah International Centre bishop Chris Suya said the donation will help the congregation to reach out to the less privileged during the festive season
