NGO to plant 10 million trees in schools in Lilongwe
Youth Network for Adaptation of Climate Change says it plans to plant about 10 million trees in primary schools in Traditional Authority Njewa in Lilongwe.
Through the Child to a Tree Project, each learner will be allocated a tree to plant and manage.
Speaking during the tree-planting exercise at Mphanje Primary School in Lilongwe, the organisation’s executive director Rodwell Kachapila said it was time to empower children in communities to take care of the environment.

“We think children have a crucial role to play in conserving the environment to mitigate the impact of climate change,” he said.
Ministry of Natural Resources and Climate Change principal forestry officer Mary Chisale commended the organisation for the initiative.
“It is important to instill the culture of planting trees in children,” she said.
Chisale said in 2021 tree survival rate was at 65 percent.
The organisation pledged to offer bursaries to children who will manage the trees.
Lilongwe Rural West district education manager Rabson Kawalala described the initiative as timely.
