Impact Centre for Economic Empowerment and Development has encouraged youths in Senior Chief Vuso Jere in Ntchisi District to venture into livestock farming.

Speaking in an interview on Monday, the organisation’s  agri-digital programme lead Mischeck Chirwa said they want the youth to become economically independent.

He said they donated a piglet each to two youth clubs which underwent livestock management lessons such as feed preparation and disease control under the Agridi Digital hub.

“We want the youth to multiply the pigs for long-term financial stability.

“We also have plans to train them in business and micro-finance management,” said Chirwa.

Senior Chief Vuso Jere thanked the organisation for the initiative, saying most young people were indulging in premarital sexual affairs leading to pregnancies because they were not involved in income-generating activities.

“Most of the boys and girls have nothing to do so this is a timely intervention because now they will be occupied with caring for the livestock which will also bring financial returns in the long-run,” he said.

Mwera Hill Youth Club vice-chairperson Felicia Makwaule said most of her friends became pregnant because of staying idle.

“We were told that when the pigs multiply, we will share them so that many youths have the opportunity to own animals,” she said.

The organisation sourced money to buy the piglets from a well-wisher Salome Chibwana-Manyunya.
