Malawi Creation Care Network, a consortium of more than 30 non-governmental organizations in environmental protection, on Saturday cleaned up Nkhotakota Main Market.

The cleanup exercise was done jointly with students and teachers from Bishop Mtekateka Secondary School, a private school run by the Anglican Church in the Diocese of Lake Malawi.

National Coordinator for the network, Charles Bakolo, said the exercise was in response to the National Clean-Up Campaign initiated by President Lazarus Chakwera.

Bakolo said there was a need to support city and local councils in waste management, adding that they lack the manpower to manage solid wastes in public markets.

On her part, district environmental officer, Jane Kaira said the exercise was timely as the council was overwhelmed with solid wastes, particularly in markets.
