District manager for National Initiative for Civic Education (Nice) Mulanje Twambilire Mwabungulu has stressed the need for the authorities to consider extending the time frame of registration in the district arguing it is too short.

He said this yesterday during a media briefing in the district to familiarise people with the registration process ahead of the 2014 Tripartite Elections.

The countrywide registration process, which will be conducted in phases, begins July next month but specific dates for Mulanje are August 25 to September 7.

“We are now pasting voter registration information on rural resource centres, and other designated places for people to know the significance of registration and voting.

“Besides this, the electorate seems to be in the dark about the meaning of such polls,” he said.

Mwabungulu said the office is expected to map religious institutions and markets for use by the office as entry points for information dissemination.

Mulanje district commissioner Jack Nguluwe urged electoral stakeholders to work together with Nice.

Mulanje has close to 500 000 people and half of them would vote next year.
