Nice Trust impressed with voter turnout in Salima

National Initiative for Civic Education (Nice) Trust has expressed satisfaction with the voter civic education exercise which led to a good turnout on polling day in Salima District.

The district registered 186 585 voters and 128 351 people turned out to vote in the September 16 General Election.

In an interview on Monday, Nice Salima programmes officer Queen Mataya said her organisation and other civil society organisations worked hard to conduct voter civic education on the general election.

She said: “We did well on turnout as we engaged many people on our pre-election activities.

“As Nice Trust, we engaged people in every corner of Salima, However, those who did not vote might have their own reasons for not doing so.

“Nonetheless, on polling day, no centre reported violent incidents and the atmosphere was non-partisan and no voter influencers were seen.”

Salima District Civil Society Organisations Network Joseph Kandiyesa described the pre-election voter civic education in the district as good.

He said: “Civic education is meant for lifelong process of preparing people to be informed and engaged, same here in Salima it went well.

“We observed that Nice Trust and other stakeholders embarked on civic-educating people about their rights and responsibilities as citizens, the principles of governance and the importance of ethical and moral behaviour.”

Kandiyesa said the voter education fosters democratic values and principles as it encourages participation in electoral processes.

Salima District elections officer Alinafe Chisenga also expressed satisfaction with the voter turnout on polling day
