Nigerian woman arrested for RBM official’s murder

Police in Lilongwe are keeping in custody Nigerian woman Annie Nwozuzu Chinyere on suspicion that she masterminded the murder of Reseerve Bank of Malawi (RBM) official Agnes Katengeza last month.

The body of Katengeza, who worked as network administrator at the central bank, was found bundled in the trunk of her abandoned KIA Sportage in Area 47 in Lilongwe on September 24 2023, barely 24 hours after she was reported missing.

In a telephone interview yesterday, lawyer for the suspect Chrispine Mndala said her client was arrested on September 27 2023 and that the police also confiscated her phones.

He said: “My client was brought before the Lilongwe Magistrate’s Court last week Thursday, where she was informed of the charges of murder.

“I also applied to the High Court in Lilongwe for bail and the court is yet to set a date to make a ruling.”

But in a brief response yesterday, National Police spokesperson Peter Kalaya could neither deny nor confirm the arrest.

He said: “We are investigating this case. The level of our investigation does not allow me to make any public comment.

However, a source familiar with the case confided in The Nation that the suspect was picked after the police tracked the deceased’s call log.

Said the source: “The cellphone activities stopped at the house of this woman. When the police wanted to interview the suspect, she behaved suspiciously to the point of dodging the police.”

Katengeza was laid to rest at Area 18 Cemetery in Lilongwe on September 26 2023 amid calls for justice.
