Nissan Malawi supports Cyclone Freddy survivors

Nissan Malawi on Saturday donated K8 milion worth of assorted food and non-food items at Mpama Camp in Chikwawa District in response to Cyclone Freddy.

The items included blankets, sugar, soap, maize flour and soya pieces.

Nissan Malawi systems manager Robin McGregor said the cyclone has caused immense damage and suffering to Malawians.

He said: “As a responsible corporate citizen, we have decided to take action and help after noticing the aftermath of this natural disaster that has left many families without homes, food and clean water.

“We understand the road to recovery will not be easy, but we are determined to play our part in helping those affected by the heavy rains the country experienced in the past weeks.”

Malawi Red Cross Society district coordinator for Chikwawa Yasintha Namacha said the district has 38 camps, which are in need of food, blankets and shelter.

She said: “Schools are opening and we need support to evacuate all seeking shelter from classrooms by providing them with tents and tarpaulins.

“The donation from Nissan Malawi will help the victims to have something to eat and to cover themselves at night as they have lost everything due to the flooding.”

One of the survivors, Ida Blamu, described the donation as worthwhile, saying it will support their lives while they remain in camp.
