Nkhotakota District Council builds health facilities

Nkhotakota District Council has constructed wards to improve healthcare service delivery in the district.

A maternity facility has been constructed at Mwansambo Clinic in Traditional Authority (T/A) Mwansambo while the ward has been built at Nkhunga in T/A Kanyenda with funding from Governance to Enable Service Delivery Project funded by the World Bank.

Speaking in an interview on Tuesday, Felicity Julius from T/A Kanyenda said the wards bring hope for better medical attention at Nkhunga Clinic.

He said:“Due to lack of admission spaces, patients in critical conditions were treated as outpatients or referred to the district hospital.

“But now we are hopeful that the completion of these wards will help our communities who need admissions for close medical supervision.”

Henry Phaso, a community member from Sasani Village in T/A Mwansambo, said the maternity facility will promote safe motherhood in the area.

“Our area is 70 kilometres away from Nkhotakota District Hospital and pregnant women were facing challenges to deliver because of lack of a maternity facility at the clinic. As a result, they were being referred to the district hospital,” he said.

Nkhotakota District Council director of planning and development Davies Kavalo also said procurement of equipment for the health facilities is at an advanced stage.

“The challenges communities faced to access healthcare services are now over,” he said.

The facilities have been constructed to the tune of K380 million.
