No BB, Nomads strikers among top scorers

Unlike in the past seasons when players from Super League giants Be Forward Wanderers and Nyasa Big Bullets dominated the top scorers list, this season the trend has changed.

So far, no player from the two outfits has scored six goals as the first-round wraps up this weekend.

Instead, Silver Strikers’ Matthews Sibale, Masters Security’s Vincent Nyangulu, Raphael Phiri from Civil Sporting Club, PremierBet Wizards’ Misheck Bottoman, Azam Tigers’ Luke Chima,  Moyale Barracks’ Khuda Muyaba and Blantyre United’s Jiddy Mbandambanda have scored six goals each.

These are followed by Joseph Kachule and Fletcher Bandawe (Civil Sporting Club) and Red Lions’ Innocent Bokosi with five goals apiece.

Muyaba scored his sixth goal on Wednesday

Wanderers team manager Steve Madeira said his side has been affected by injuries.

“Most of our strikers are  injured. Some are just back from injuries and this has affected our performance,” he said.

Wanderers strikers on injury list include Amos Bello, Ishmael Thindwa while their top goal scorer, Wadabwa has just recovered.

The Nomads, however, seem to have recovered from the goal drought and scored five goals against Moyale Barracks on Wednesday.

Wadabwa scored a brace in the 6-1 victory over Moyale that helped the Nomads reclaim the top position from Silver.

However, rivals Big Bullets are still struggling to score and have also been relying on midfielders and defenders to score.

Strikers Chikepo Msowoya, Bright Munthali, Muhammad Sulumba have fired blanks this season, forcing coach Elia Kananji to rely on other on-field players.

The People’s Team struggled to beat Red Lions 1-0 at Chilomoni Stadium on Wednesday with a goal from midfielder Nelson Kangunje.

Bullets also had to rely on defender Emmanuel Zoya to beat the Nomads 1-0 in their previous league fixture.

Kananji said they are grateful to the other on-field players for rescuing the team.

“Of course strikers’ job is to score. But any on field player can also score. We appreciate that this is helping us to win. We just play that the strikers’ bad spell will go soon,” he said.
