No tears for Daza—MCP

Opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) says it cannot shed tears over the defection of its secretary general Chris Daza to the People’s Party (PP) on Wednesday.

Daza, who has served only two months since his reelection at the MCP convention, served on the SG position for five years.

During the five-year period, Daza dragged the former MCP president John Tembo to court after the latter fired him for challenging his authority.

MCP spokesperson Jessie Kabwila said while they respected Daza’s right to join another political party, MCP  is not fazed and would remain strong.

Kabwila said having fielded many presidential candidates at its convention, the party was not lacking the capacity to ably fill the created SG vacancy.

“The departure of the SG does not faze us in anyway. MCP is owned by people most of whom are in rural areas and they have not gone anywhere.

“We are here on the trust people have in us and if we betray that trust, it is a problem,” Kabwila said.

As SG, Daza would have been at the centre of organising the party’s primary elections which are due to start next week.

Daza joined politician Gwanda Chakuamba and Katola Phiri to officially join PP at a rally President Joyce Banda held in Ntchisi after a chiefs’ elevation ceremony.

Political analyst Mustapha Hussein said while the PP did not need the two politicians, he described Daza and Chakuamba as people of some political influence who would strengthen numbers in PP ahead of the 2014 elections.
