Nomads allow Phiri to choose assistant

Mighty Wanderers have given coach Gerald Phiri the mandate to choose his own backroom staff, including assistant coach Charles Manda’s replacement.

The club’s general secretary Mike Butao said Manda has fired himself by going absent without leave of the club’s management.

“It is, in fact, a blessing to Gerald [Phiri] who is now free to choose his assistant and also other members of his backroom staff. A coach is supposed to choose people he can work with in the technical panel,” said Butao.

According to Butao, they have already written Manda on the issue, but they do not know where to deliver the letter.

The decision has come as a big motivation to Phiri who is under pressure to deliver.

“Reports that we are firing the coach are not true and we have never, as an executive, entertained that notion. Our focus now is for the team to perform and we will give the coach all our support to ensure that the team is back on track,” said Butao.

For the first time in decades, Wanderers face the risk of being relegated after a series of poor results, the latest of which was on Monday when they lost 0-2 against Moyale at Balaka Stadium.

But Butao insisted that Wanderers will not be relegated.
