Be Forward Wanderers have defended the move to sign battle-hardened striker Esau Kanyenda when they already have a pool of strikers.

“This is a key signing for us because our strikers Amos Bello, Peter Wadabwa, Jafallie Chande and Ishmael Thindwa have all been out for a long time.

“Thindwa and Bello have not played any football at all this season. Wadabwa only played two games before succumbing to the same injury while Chande only resumed playing two weeks ago.

Kanyenda: I am excited

“You can see that we have been winning most of our matches by small margins. We have been too dependent on youngsters such as Precious Msosa, Julius Kajembe and Khumbo Ng’ambi to lead the line while playing our other creative players as number 10 and while they have done a brilliant job so far, we don’t want to overburden them and burn them out.”

He said the technical panel requested the signing of Kanyenda as soon as he became available.

“They wanted a seasoned striker who will hit the ground running, an already proven goals-scorer and somebody who will create havoc in the penalty box which the younger players can exploit. That’s Esau.

“The league is already at an intense level and Esau will not need time to adjust and adapt. He is a professional. So, we are happy he chose us,” he said.

Kanyenda, who is reported to have signed until the end of the season, on Tuesday said he is excited to have joined one of the biggest and most ambitious teams on the local scene. n
