Nomads, Bullets dissatisfied with K102m derby revenue

Domestic football giants Mighty Wanderers and FCB Nyasa Bullets have expressed disappointment with the K102.7 million gross revenue from their FDH Bank Cup semi-final at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre on Sunday.

The figure is about K36 million less than what was raised in the previous weekend’s TNM Super League Blantyre derby between the two teams at the same venue.

Expenses from Sunday’s match amounted to K17.8 million, leaving a net of about K84 million.

The two teams and stadium owners, Ministry of Youth and Sports received K21.2 million each, Football Association of Malawi got K16.96 million while the Malawi National Council of Sports received K4.24 million.

On reaction, Wanderers chief executive officer Panganeni Ndovi said: “We are dissatisfied with the gross amount realised.

“Despite a significantly higher turnout compared to the previous fixture, with a visibly large and enthusiastic crowd in attendance, the financial return does not correspond with the numbers we witnessed.

“It is particularly disconcerting that, over a period of time, fixtures have continued to register high attendances yet yield disproportionately low revenues.”

He said as a club, they are undertaking a review to ascertain the underlying factors contributing to this discrepancy.

“Once this examination is concluded, we shall implement the necessary adjustments to ensure greater accountability and alignment between attendance and financial outcomes going forward,” said Ndovi.

On his part, Bullets acting CEO Albert Chigoga said: “I doubt if K102 million is a true reflection of the crowd that turned up and the gate charges people paid to watch the game.

“That said, there is absolutely nothing we can do about it.”

Wanderers won the match 1-0 courtesy of Promise Kamwendo’s 89th minute strike.
