Nomads coach gives up on title

After surrendering the Standard Bank Knockout Cup which they proudly held on to for two years, Mighty Wanderers have now switched focus to the second-round of the TNM Super League.

The Nomads start the second-round campaign with a tricky fixture against Mafco at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre this afternoon although their coach Gerald Phiri has conceded that they do not stand a realistic chance to compete for the title.

Both the Nomads and Mafco were booted out of the Standard Bank Knockout Cup in the semi-finals last weekend by Silver Strikers and Azam Tigers respectively.

Apparently, Phiri will not be available for the Nomads match this afternoon as he is in Zambia with the Under-20 national team. Caretaker assistant coaches McDonald Yobe and Trevor Kajawa will be in charge under the supervision of team manager Kannock Munde.

Munde yesterday said the Nomads are looking forward to a good start so as to move in the comfort zone while Mafco coach Stereo Gondwe feels his team stands a good chance to compete for the title.

The Nomads are fourth from the bottom with 14 points from 14 games whereas Mafco are on fifth position with 23 points from 14 games.

In Mzuzu, league leaders Moyale Barracks are aiming to extend the lead at the top when they host Blantyre United who are currently second from the bottom with 10 points from 14 games.

Blantyre United finished the first-round at the bottom of the table. They were able to move a step up from the bottom last weekend courtesy of Karonga United’s poor start when they lost both their games to fellow rookies Airborne Rangers (2-1) and Blue Eagles (4-1).

Moyale assistant coach Themba Ntontholo said: “It would be dangerous if we drop points on Saturday because it will give chance to our close contenders Bullets to overtake us.
